What is posture?
We have all been told at some stage that we have ‘poor posture’ and that we need to straighten our back but what does that all mean? Posture refers to the alignment of our body. Many of us can get away with slouching on the couch in a poor posture. However, if you do have pain then poor posture can exacerbate your musculoskeletal condition. It is important to get in early and see a physiotherapist to get your poor posture fixed. Think about this example, you are walking with a small stone in your shoe. You ignore it even if it feels uncomfortable but it changes the way you walk because of the stone. If you continue in this poor posture, you may eventually notice pain in your knees and pain.
Many jobs these days require people to sit at their desk for long hours. This sustained posture along with the working from home arrangements have led to many people experiencing work related musculoskeletal disorders. Many people are moving less due to the nature of their work. Poor ergonomic set up and prolonged sustained posture is a recipe for neck and lower back pain. At Myphysio, we offer a posture screening tool to identify ways to have better posture and move more efficiently in your daily activities.
What is PostureScreen?
PostureScreen is a mobile posture screening application that scans and provides instant data about how you stand, sit and how you bend to pick up your grocery bags. This application allows us to identify any underlying biomechanical issues that can be contributing to your postural pain. This movement analysis software accurately measures angles and linear distances of your posture. Once the video and images have been taken at the clinic. We go through each of the issues we find about your posture and provide you with a report. Our physiotherapist will show you the most efficient posture. Myphysio physiotherapists will explain the potential muscles and joints that could be contributing to your postural pain then provide you with a comprehensive rehabilitation program to help to get back to enjoying life.
What can I do about my posture?
A good posture is the correct alignment of the body so that your muscles can perform in their most efficient state. If your bones are not in the correct position due to poor posture then the muscles will work at an mechanical disadvantage and place more load on your body. It is important to note that there is no perfect posture! You may already know that it is very difficult to hold that ‘perfect posture’ for a long period of time. A general awareness of proper posture and an attempt to correct it is usually sufficient for most people. Remember that the best posture is your next posture! This means that it is important to frequently change positions when you are seated for a prolonged duration. This can be going for a brief walk to the kitchen to make a cup of tea.
