Why do my muscles and joints ache during winter

Body aches and joint pain during winter

Often, when the weather shifts to the colder months, people notice their injuries or joints ache. Those with pre-existing injuries such as osteoarthritis frequently report increased joint stiffness and pain. One of the main reasons why we experience this phenomenon is due to an increased in sedentary behaviour. Our body loves movement and when we are sedentary then there is a decrease blood flow through the joints and after some time that lack of blood flow leads to stiffness and body aches. The first few movements when getting up from a chair or out of bed tend to be the most painful. When our bodies are warm, our joints stretch better and are less likely to stiffen. Therefore, we should not be sitting for prolonged periods of time, it is recommended to stand up and move after 45 minutes of sitting.

Daily exercise can help reduce muscle and joint aches

Now, let’s talk about our posture sitting in the office or in front of your computer. We often experience tightness and soreness in our neck, shoulders and lower back after some screen time. Picture someone hunched over at the computer, the shoulder is elevated and chin slightly protruded. That adopted kyphotic posture can lead to tight upper trapezius muscles and stiff thoracic spine, over time these muscles get fatigued and overworked. When you begin to feel that slight ache, it is your body telling you it is time to move into the next position. Remember, motion is lotion and there is no perfect posture, your best posture is your next posture. It is time to stand up and grab a cup of tea so you do some incidental walking. The next step is to incorporate a regular exercise routine, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare recommends at least 1 hour of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity per day. It is also advised to incorporate 2x of strength training each week to build and maintain strong bones and muscles.
