How to manage vertigo symptoms

What is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)?

Vertigo is the sudden spinning sensation inside the head. It is often described as the world is spinning around them. The most common type of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). The dizziness caused by BPPV is dependent on your head position. People with BPPV may find that they have vertigo symptoms when they look up, lie down or turn their head over in bed. BPPV can affect people across all ages however it is most common in the elderly population. In most cases, the exact cause of BPPV is not clear. Some possible factors that may cause this condition are head trauma, vestibular neuritis and prolonged bed rest.

The signs and symptoms of BPPV:

  • Positional dizziness
  • Spinning sensation
  • Loss of balance
  • Vomiting
  • Nystagmus
  • Nausea

Management of BPPV:

Physiotherapy is an effective treatment tool to manage symptoms of BPPV. An expert physiotherapist will be able to perform specific test to determine the type of vertigo you have and direct you to the best possible management strategy. A consultation with your general practitioner can also be helpful to differentiate from other medical conditions that may have similar BPPV symptoms. Your general practitioner can also provide antiemetic medications to alleviate nausea symptoms. If the physiotherapist suspect it is BPPV vertigo then you may be prescribed a series of body movements called the Epleys Manoeuvre.

BPPV symptoms occur when a crystal or canaliths gets displaced into the inner ear canal. The crystals lodge in the ear canal may cause fluid movement which makes the brain think that movement has occurred hence leading to the spinning sensation experience. Epleys manoeuvre places the head in different positions to help flush the calcium crystals out of the posterior ear canal. Symptoms of BPPV usually resolved within a few weeks with the proper treatment however it can last up to several months.
